Kid Bots: Industrial Design Students and Boston Children’s Museum Collaboration

The “Kid Bots” exhibit features 3D-printed robots which take inspiration from drawings by young children during visits to the Boston Children’s Museum. These visits were part of an EPIC (externally collaborative, project-based, interdisciplinary, culture) experience — a collaboration with Wentworth’s Department of Industrial Design and the Boston Children’s Museum. Using the ideas of young children as a source of creativity to build professional-level, three-dimensional representations of those ideas is understandably fascinating and rarely accomplished.

After the young children sketched or doodled their personal ideas of a robot, junior students in a Wentworth CAD modeling class interpreted, modeled and rendered them. The installation connects the thinkers of tomorrow and those of today and includes drawings, models and photographs. The creative breadth of ideas is enjoyable and enlightening. Take a look at the presentation slides below.

The “Kid Bots” exhibit will be on view through April 5, 2019 and is open to the public during regular library hours. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 16 from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m.For more information see the Wentworth news story or contact libraryexhibits@wit.edu.
