Speaker and honorary degree recipient Art Zafiropoulo, EE ’60, described parents who escaped the ravages of World War I and found a better life in Boston.

“Life is exciting,” said the retired former president of global technology company Ultratech. “Working hard and taking calculated risks can make your future successful and fun beyond your expectations.”

Student speaker Stephanie Crepeau urged her classmates to “embrace the unknown” at the Summer Commencement ceremony on August 20 at Blue Hills Bank Pavilion.

“There is a change coming today whether you realize it or not,” said the Construction Management major in a speech to more than 650 graduates. “[Change] is where the opportunities, excitement, and the chance to make a difference live.”

The graduates were the first to receive diplomas since the Institute was designated a university by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education.
