Erasure Poetry on Display

Erasure Poems by Professor Monaghan's poetry workshop, December 2022-January 2023

Students in Professor Gloria Monaghan’s Poetry Workshop are proud to present their erasure poetry in Douglas D. Schumann Library. This series of poems will be displayed in the Gray Gallery near the Genius Bar until the end of January.

According to Professor Gloria Monaghan, “Erasure poetry, also known as blackout poetry, is a form of found poetry wherein a poet takes an existing text and erases, blacks out, or otherwise obscures a large portion of the text, creating a wholly new work from what remains.”

Students used readings from other courses, favorite short stories, and even used books to recontextualize and reinterpret the texts. The resulting erasure poems speak to how these students view themselves and their perspectives on the world.
