With an intricately cut wood design and glowing, cool blue strip, Cody Smith, BIND ’16, created a sleek, modern lamp that quickly became a show-stopping piece when it went on display over the summer at the Midway Artist Studios in Boston.

Achieving the design required working with a dyed liquid epoxy that is both expensive and time-consuming to use, requiring 24 hours to cure.

“I was excited to kick off my experimentation, as I’d never dealt with liquid resin on this large a scale,” says Smith. He meticulously planned his steps, using hardened wax as a master mold and LED light strips to allow the light to radiate from the front and the back of the lamp. A 1.5” pool of epoxy was used to hold the structure together and create the blue diffuser on the top.
