Faculty and Staff

Five faculty projects recently received funding by the Presidential EPIC Mini-Grants Committee: Assistant Professor Rachel Maitra, hybrid virtual-physical fractal experience; Associate Professor John Voccio, low-cost braille typewriter; Assistant Professor Chen-Hsiang Yu, mobile health system and homecare medical device; Assistant Professor Rob Trumbour, artificial intelligence and industrial robotics; Assistant Professor Douglas Goodman, “Beating Earnshaw’s Theorem.”

Paul Lazarovich [a], associate professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, was honored with the Jeff Tellis Outstanding Advisor Award for his work with WIRE, Wentworth’s internet radio station. Lazarovich was honored at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s annual convention in New York City.

President Zorica Pantic attended the U.S.-Israel Growth Summit at Tel Aviv University in Israel. The summit was aimed at drawing Israeli tech companies to Boston. President Pantic joined representatives from Massachusetts cybersecurity and healthcare companies, as well as other university representatives.

An abstract by Abigail Charest [b], assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Technology, was accepted for a session at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2017 convention. Charest will work on the project with Nicole Jensen, assistant director of the Center for Community and Learning Partnerships, and Laurie Dickstein-Fischer, assistant professor at Salem State University.

Students

Blake Swanson, BID ’18 [c], was featured in the September/October 2016 issue of Design New England magazine, winning the People’s Choice award in the magazine’s “Design Showdown.” Swanson was tasked with designing a hypothetical residential space on Boston’s Newbury Street, and was one of eight finalists who presented her design at the Boston Design Center.

Paul Arduini, William Toohey, and Qiang Wang, BSA ’17 [d], placed sixth in the Liberty Museum New York competition, in which teams were tasked with creating a hypothetical, social justice-themed museum on New York City’s Liberty Island. The students competed against 268 teams of students and professional architects and designers.

Juan Torres, BSA ’16, MARC ’17, was selected for a Kuehn Foundation internship, which selects graduate students with an interest in affordable housing and community design for a two-year placement with a Boston-area nonprofit developer. Torres has been focusing on affordable housing in his thesis work at Wentworth.

Pablo Herraiz, BSA ’18 [e], was awarded the Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad Scholarship, which gives undergraduate students the opportunity to study, work, and travel in China. Herraiz studied Chinese language and culture, worked as intern designing mobile apps for K–12 students, and completed a co-op at People’s Architecture Office in Beijing.

Elias Garcia, TPMC ’17, and Stephen Sylvester, BPM ’17, were named the recipients of the first International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 103 / National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) Scholarship.
