On November 10, 2022, Frauhaus: Women of Industrial Design presents “Design Intersection,” an event to build accessible opportunities to share insights on topics that push us all to be better thinkers, designers, and collaborators. All students, staff, and faculty are welcome to attend the event in the CEIS Lobby from 5:30-7:30 on Thursday, November 10.

Wentworth’s School for Architecture and Design is honored to host Ayako Takase, who will  present her talk, “Urgent Call for Intersectionality in Design.” Takase is a gender non-conforming Asian mother and parent in the US who is never perfectly here nor there. She is the founder of Observatory, a design studio based in Providence, Rhode Island, and an Associate Professor of Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

First presented at the IDSA’s 2022 International Design Conference in Seattle, this talk is a proposition, and plea, for design professionals, organizations, and industries to intentionally open doors to communities who have been gatekept from the industry – including  Black and Indigenous people, non-Eurocentric communities, neurodivergent people, disabled people, and those in the LGBTQ+ community. Takase invites the audience to interrogate the inclusivity of the current field, examine diversity-hire trends, and share a call to do better. Gaining from Takase’s experience, students and professionals alike will gain perspective on how to thoughtfully position themselves for success.

While the event only occurs on November 10, the posters from the talk will be available to view throughout the month of November – make sure to stop by CEIS and check them out!
